Major Bleeding

What is a major or 

catastrophic bleed?

• An injury that causes heavy blood loss, which can be from a vein or artery

• It may not 'spurt out' like you see in movies

• The bleeding will be uncontrollable using standard first aid dressings 

• It will continue to flow until all the blood is lost

• Without early intervention the bleeding will ultimately lead to death

What types of injuries cause 

major bleeds?

• Stabbings (Thankfully rare in our community) 

• Agricultural incidents

• Kitchen related injuries
